Update on Emergency Shelters

Three Gulfport residents stayed at an evacuation shelter last night after emergency workers rescued them from yesterday’s flood waters.
The County Farm Road shelter opened its doors yesterday to any residents who were forced from their homes because of the severe weather. American Red Cross volunteers provided food and other resources for the three people staying at the shelter, a mother and two daughters.
Even though flooding forced the family out of their home, one of the Red Cross volunteers tells News 25 the family’s spirits were still high. Ron Henderson with the Red Cross said, “People’s spirits are very, very good and of course, they’re sad that they’ve lost their property and not all of them had because folks over here yesterday, the water was up to the edge of their home but didn’t enter their home.”
Doors closed at the shelter at 8 this morning, but will reopen if any residents need emergency shelter because of flooding.
