Update on lawsuit against Bonnet Carre Spillway opening
At the Biloxi Town Hall meeting today, the Mississippi Sound Coalition updated Biloxi city leaders on the litigation against the Army Corps of Engineers.
After the 2019 Bonnet Carre Spillway was open twice, causing severe damage to the Mississippi tourism and seafood industry, the coalition filed a lawsuit to require environmental impact statements and consulting with local and city governments before opening the spillway again.
The Mississippi Sound Coalition is also confident there are alternatives to avoid damage in the future to the Mississippi Sound and in Louisiana. Mississippi Sound Coalition Manager Gerald Blessey said, “Presenting where we are in the federal court case and bringing up the date of our activity, we’re going to the congress in June to ask for our representatives, congressmen and senators to introduce and pass the Mississippi Sound and Lake Pontchartrain Protection Act to try to give the force in Federal Law to what we’re trying to do here to protect the sound from future damage.”
The coalition is also looking forward to public hearings to invite the public and keep everyone informed on the case.
