Update: Gulfport Councilman Myles Sharp officially tenders resignation

Gulfport Ward 5 Councilman Myles Sharp officially tendered his resignation to Council President Rusty Walker Friday, days after announcing his intention to resign.

Sharp’s resignation takes effect at 11:30 p.m. on Monday, December 30.

Since the resignation takes effect with more than six months left in the current term, a special election will apparently be held to fill the seat.

Sharp cited a new job opportunity in the new year as the reason for his resignation.

In a statement, Sharp said relating to a special election: “While I recognize that a special election would put a burden on the city, I cannot let that outweigh the very real possibility that Ward 5 would be without representation should the council be unable to agree on an appointment. Additionally, the residents of Ward 5 should have the opportunity to choose their representative.”
