Unusual spike in auto burglaries in Gautier

Gautier police are urging residents to lock up after an abnormal amount of auto burglaries throughout the city.
Authorities say over a dozen vehicles were burglarized over the weekend, mostly on the south side of Gautier. Gautier police tell News 25 the items stolen range from firearms to sunglasses to cash and credit cards.
According to the police department, most of the burglaries happened Sunday night. Officers say this weekend’s spike in auto crimes should serve as a safety reminder to car owners and residents. Officer Austin Langfitt said, “Locking our vehicles, taking valuables out of the vehicles and security lights are a big deal. You’ll go down some streets and you have no security lights, down the whole street. That makes an easy target for criminals. Most of the vehicles were left unlocked with valuable items inside.”
Gautier police are asking anyone who has information that could help them with the investigation of the vehicle burglaries to call Crime Stoppers or the police department.
