University of Southern Mississippi opens rural digital forensics lab

The University of Southern Mississippi has opened the rural digital forensics initiative lab.

It’s a facility designed to help rural law enforcement agencies access forensic resources and investigative support.

The lab is one of only three of its kind in Mississippi and can assist with examining smartphones, tablets, computers, and other digital storage devices.

The laboratory will help bridge gaps in resources for smaller departments while also providing continuing education opportunities through an online training platform called ‘virtual academy.’

The program also gives USM students hands-on experience in digital forensics and criminal investigations, helping prepare the next generation of public safety professionals.
