University of Mississippi Medical Center awarded prescription opioid abuse research grant

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith announced a hefty grant to allow the University of Mississippi Medical Center to continue research for prescription opioid abuse.

Last week the CDC issued provisional drug overdose death counts for 2020 which reported a 30 percent increase in drug overdose deaths in the U.S.  last year.

Just in Mississippi, there was nearly a 35 percent increase in such fatalities in 2020.

Hyde-Smith said last week’s release of U.S. drug overdose data underscores the need for the UMMC research.

Wednesday, she announced a $663,080 grant which represents a continuation of funding for the research project started in 2015 and is expected to extend through May 2026.
