UFC fighter Jason ‘The Kid’ Knight prepares for Liverpool

By the age of 14, Mississippi’s own Jason Knight turned his passion for fighting into a career. Currently in the UFC, Knight looks to continue to climb the featherweight rankings with a fight in Liverpool, England on May 27th.

Before he leaves for the U.K., News 25’s Jaylon Morris catches up with the ‘kid’ from D’Iberville.

The itch for combat sports came to Jason Knight eleven years ago when his brother-in-law wanted to keep him away from trouble. “I was fourteen. I was just a real bad kid. I wanted to fight anybody for anything. He wanted to start teaching me how to box.”

He transitioned into mixed martial arts just in time for his big break. Still 14, Knight asked a promoter to let him fight at a club in Mobile, Alabama. “He said ‘if your mom signs it, you can fight.’ Got it signed that Monday, fought that Wednesday, and I haven’t slowed down since.”

Now 20-4 with 13 wins by submission and three by knockout, the Kid takes on Makwan Amirkhani in Liverpool, England a week from Sunday. “The difference between me and him is even if you get me in a bad spot, you are never going to see me fold.”

Knight’s last fight was in December. Since then he has improved with his patience and his pace when he steps inside the octagon. “Learning from that fight and previous fights, I always take a punch to give a punch. With this fight, I’m going to try not to do that as much.”

Mississippi has always been in his corner. For new fans, this will be a fight you don’t want to miss. “You are going to see a guy grit his teeth and put his heart on the line. If you want to see something exciting, make sure you don’t miss the fight because I promise you, I will not disappoint.”

You can catch the Kid next Sunday on FS1.
