U.S. veteran and single mom receives life-changing gift through car donation program
Alicia Robinson receives a restored vehicle through the NABC Recycled Rides program and Unique Collision Center
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) — A Gulf Coast U.S. Air Force veteran is driving into a brighter future after receiving a restored SUV through a national car donation program aimed at helping those in need.
Alicia Robinson, a single mother and veteran who served as an Airman First Class, was gifted a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse through the NABC Recycled Rides program — a national initiative where collision industry professionals donate refurbished vehicles to deserving individuals.
Robinson was overcome with emotion at the surprise giveaway, which was held at Unique Collision Center in Gulfport, Mississippi — the company’s first time participating in the nationwide program.
“Oh, I’m greatly excited,” Robinson said. “It’s been over a year since they announced that I won… this moment has been building up for so long. I’m just so excited about it.”
From Public Transit to the Driver’s Seat
After serving her country, Robinson has faced significant challenges transitioning to civilian life — all while raising her 13-year-old daughter and working toward becoming a registered nurse.
Without a car, she relied on public transportation and costly rideshare services just to get to work, school, and countless doctor’s appointments.
“I’ve used public transportation, Uber, and oh, it hurts the pockets a lot when you Uber,” she said. “Thousands. Thousands, most definitely.”
Recycled Rides and Community Support
This life-changing gift was made possible through a partnership between Unique Collision Center, State Farm, and the National Auto Body Council. Since its inception in 2007, the NABC Recycled Rides program has donated more than 3,500 vehicles, valued at over $51 million.
Elmer Pique, owner of Unique Collision Center, said the project was delayed due to COVID-19 supply chain issues, but the team was committed to seeing it through.
“It’s amazing. To be able to give back to someone that’s deserving and who put her life on the line with the military… it’s a real honor,” said Pique. “For me, this is our first one, but we’re committed to doing one at our Biloxi store and one at our Ocean Springs store.”
A New Chapter
For Robinson, the keys to the Traverse unlock more than just transportation — they represent freedom, independence, and a second chance.
“It made me feel like I was actually a hero. I mean, I guess I am,” she said with a smile. “I’m in love with the car. I mean, look at it. Look at it. I just want to thank God.”
With reliable transportation, she now plans to finish her CNA certification, return to college, and continue working at her job with a major retailer — all while being there for her daughter, who was present at the event.
“I’m so glad that she was able to see it,” Robinson said. “That gives her inspiration that there are good people in this world.”
