U.S.S. Ted Stevens Christening Ceremony at Ingalls Shipyard
Ingalls Shipbuilding held a christening ceremony for a vessel named after former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens.
The late senator’s wife, Catherine Ann Stevens, and his daughters Susan Stevens Covich and Lily Irene Becker took part in the christening as sponsors of the ship.
During his tenure, Senator Stevens was known for his advocacy for Alaska and his contributions to national security.
Senator Stevens served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II, earning two air medals for his dedication and bravery, two qualities that Becker knows the U.S.S. Ted Stevens will carry into battle. “My family and I pay tribute to the captain and crew, and all who serve. We hope you will never be called to fight, but we know that if you are, you will be prepared with the best systems and the best people. You will have the spirit of Alaska and the determination of Ted Stevens with you.”
The U.S.S. Ted Stevens is now the 36th Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer Ingalls has built for the U.S. Navy and the second ship with flight 3 technology.
