Two Stone County organizations team up to help rebuild storm damaged homes

STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- Two Stone County nonprofit organizations are coming together to help families still recovering from the devastating storms that swept through the area weeks ago.

Just the Crumbs Ministry and Vardaman Street Baptist Church are working to raise money to rebuild homes for Perkinston residents who lost everything in the flooding.

Organizers say the funds will assist families whose insurance does not cover the damage, often because their homes were not located in a designated flood zone.

We spoke with a flood victim and relief organizers about the recovery efforts and how the community can help those still working to rebuild their lives. Stone County resident Deborah Meza said, “We didn’t know what we were going to do. We didn’t have the manpower to even gut the houses. This is my daughter’s home that I’m standing in, and mine is right in front of hers. We didn’t know what we were going to do, and someone reached out and told us about Brandy’s organization, and I made a call, and he was here. He called me that day, he was here the next day with people, and they went to work. It was a lifeline, truly.”

Just the Crumbs Ministry President Brandy Haden said, “This house here you can see flooded in in places four foot deep, the walls have been ripped out, so we’ve got to go back with insulation, sheet rock, some floor covering, some two by fours have got to be replaced. Also, they’ve lost their furniture and stuff like that. So, we’re just, we’re trying to bring awareness to this need, and hopefully get some money raised to be able to put these houses back together.”

Pastor Jake Staten said, “We have a crew that’s ready to go and start putting everything back together this upcoming Saturday. So, we’re actually getting it done very quickly. We already have a couple houses that we briefly discussed today that we’re going to get into.”
