Two Coast students set state powerlifting records

This weekend, the MHSAA held the 2022 Powerlifting State Championship.

For the boys, the 6A championship went to Gulfport High, Class 5A went to Lake Cormorant, 4A went to South Pike, 3A goes to Kossuth, 2A went to Velma Jackson, and 1A went to TCPS.

For the girls, the 6A first place trophy went to the ladies at D’Iberville. In 5A, Gautier High took home the trophy, and 4A winners go to South Pontotoc and Class 1 went to East Union.

Two powerlifters who competed this weekend gave the spectators even more excitement than they thought they were going to get with the breaking of two state weightlifting records.

First, 17-year-old West Harrison High junior Evan Turan pumped out a 710-pound squat to break the state 5A squat record in the 308-weight class. This squat broke the previous record of 705 pounds set all the way back in 2003.

The other record set this weekend was 740-pound deadlift set by D’Iberville senior Colton Deshazo. This deadlift is now the all-time Mississippi deadlift record.

Turan told News 25 how he felt once he cleared the lift. “I personally wasn’t that worried. I had done a couple of warm ups in the warm up area. I was probably doing like 540 and it was going up real easy, but I was more worried about my mom because she gets crazy nervous about stuff like this.”

Turan says he wishes that he would have added just a few more pounds to break that all-time state record at 740 and hopes to break that next year.
