Two Bay Waveland School District elementary schools receive Science of Reading recognition

The Mississippi Department of Education designated seven elementary schools as ‘Mississippi Emerging Science of Reading’ schools for the 2022-2023 school year.

Five out of the seven schools are right here along the Coast.

Today, North Bay Elementary School and Waveland Elementary School celebrated their accomplishment of becoming a science of reading school by holding a school-wide celebration.

The recognition is for schools that have trained teachers in the science of reading, exemplified a change of instructional practices, and embodied a school culture that focuses on building skillful, strong readers in kindergarten through third grade. Superintendent Dr. Sandra Reed said, “The fact that both of our elementary schools have received the Science of Reading award from MDE is phenomenal. It just really shows the overall effort that our staff put forth towards reading and the importance we place on reading in our school district.”

Three schools in the Pascagoula-Gautier School District will be recognized Tuesday.
