Hit And Run

Two people have been arrested in connection to a fatal hit and run accident in Gulfport.

The Gulfport Police arrested 46-year-old Kenith Ray Smith and charged him with one count of hit and run causing death.

Police also arrested 48-year-old Barbara Ann Cooper. She was charged with one count of accessory after the fact.

Last month, officers responded to Broad Avenue and 13th Street in reference to a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer identified the victim as 27-year-old Isaiah Ashley. He was taken to Memorial Hospital where he later died.

Smith was identified as the driver. According to officials, Smith fled the scene of the accident without assisting or providing aid.

Through the investigation, detectives determined that Cooper knew of the accident, but failed to report it to authorities.

Both Smith and Cooper are being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers.
