Twin stingrays born at Mississippi Aquarium

It was an exciting day at the Mississippi Aquarium as they added two new members to their family.

A little less than a year ago, the aquarium noticed one of their cownose stingrays, Pippa, was pregnant with twins.

Giving birth to twins is very rare for rays so Pippa was watched carefully at a different location and she was induced by a vet last week.

Due to several positive signs, the twins, Squiggles and Wiggles, were happily introduced to the main habitat this morning.

Curator of Aquatics Amy Bajaek tells News 25 that experiences like this birth are the reason she enjoys her job. “Whenever you see animals reproducing and having these healthy offspring, it just makes it known to us that we’re giving these animals everything that they need. We’re helping people that have never touched these animals before and that’s amazing. They’ve never gotten this close to these animals. They actually have an idea that stringrays are all dangerous, and I like to show them that these guys are the most social of a species I feel, and they will come over and actually want to be touched.”

If you wish to see how the twin pups are adjusting to their new habitat you can visit them at the Mississippi Aquarium in Gulfport.
