Twelfth Night Celebration

Goodbye Christmas, hello carnival season!
Biloxi kicked off Mardi Gras tonight in grand fashion. It started at the visitor center as the 2015-2016 reigning king, queen and royal party made their entrance. With a countdown from three, the king and queen extinguished the Biloxi Lighthouse Christmas lights before parading down Highway 90 to the Mardi Gras Museum where they then lit the purple, gold and green lights to signify the start of Mardi Gras. Chairman of the Board of Carnival Alwyn Luckey said, “Mardi Gras begins according to the church calendar before Easter and so as Easter moves, so does Mardi Gras. This year is one of the earliest days it can be. So, we do have a short season from Christmas to the actual celebration of Mardi Gras in February.”
Bill Raymond, Biloxi Visitors Center manager, tells News 25 this is the fourth year the city has kicked off Mardi Gras with a Twelfth Night celebration. Around 200 guests were in attendance.
