Turkey Creek Sign Unveiling

A historical marker is back where it belongs.

The Turkey Creek marker was put up in 2018 to bring attention to the area where freed slaves enhanced the community over 150 years ago. In 2021, the sign that celebrated the heritage of Gulfport’s Turkey Creek community was vandalized.

Residents created a Go-Fund-Me page for a new marker – with $2500 raised. The marker is located on the corner of Three Rivers Road and Rippy Road. It was officially unveiled this past weekend.

“Restoring this thing really helped us so that we remember our pioneers, what they did for this entire community, and the city of Gulfport as well,” says Merlon Hines, VP of the Turkey Creek Homeowners Association. “We want everyone to know that we are yet a viable community, and we’re gonna stay here. We’re not going anywhere. We’re just so thankful for all of that.”
