Trump to Hold Rally on the Coast

Santa Claus is coming to town in just a few days. About a week after him, Donald Trump will be making his way to the Gulf Coast. Trump will speak to a crowd on January 2nd in Biloxi. News 25’s Bryan Kennedy takes a look at what this visit means for the Gulf Coast.
The hair, the outrageous comments and that persona: they’ll all be making their way to the Gulf Coast on January 2nd. This will be Trump’s first visit to the Magnolia State and former Republican presidential candidate Mark Everson, of Gautier, says Trump’s visit to our state shows just how important Mississippi is on the campaign trail. “Well, it really shows that Mississippi is in play and it’s important in the Republican nominating process,” said Everson, “He’s pretty shrewd. He wouldn’t be coming if he didn’t think he had to.”
Preparations are already underway in the city of Biloxi and the Coast Coliseum, where the set up planned for the Trump rally can seat about 13,000 people. Coliseum leaders tell News 25 they’ve been in talks with Trump and his people for just over a week now and talks moved fast. Now, the Coast and the coliseum prepare once again for the national stage and spotlight. Executive Director for the Coast Coliseum Matt McDonnell said, “It’s definitely star power. There’s no doubt about it. When you see how much press that this gentleman is getting on the campaign trail, positive, negative, it doesn’t matter. It’s all press and people want to see him.”
In a little over a week, thousands will pack the arena to hear Trump speak. One Coast Republican leader says regardless of which side you fall on, this is a can’t miss opportunity. “I encourage every citizen to take a good look at all the candidates and participate in our electoral process. To the degree that he has excited people is a good thing. It’s not a good thing if it results in extremism and divisiveness,” said Everson.
News 25 spoke with Chief John Miller of the Biloxi Police Department and he says they are currently developing a plan to ensure everyone’s safety at the event, as well as a traffic plan to aid drivers before and after the rally.
