Troy presents familiar foe for Southern Miss
The Southern Miss football program is in a better place than it was at this same time last week coming off a dominating 37-0 home victory over Grambling State.
The Golden Eagles got strong quarterback play from both Trey Lowe III and Ty Keyes, each accounting for a passing touchdown.
Frank Gore Jr. handled the ground attack, going for 162 and a score on 21 carries.
A lot of new faces making plays since the last time Chip Lindsey was donning the black and gold as USM’s offensive coordinator from 2014 to 2015.
Now, the third-year head coach of the Troy Trojans, Lindsey knows exactly what he’s walking into as a visitor, having lost in a head-to-head shootout against USM as recently as 2019. “The two years I was there, that was my first opportunity to be a coordinator in college. It was really two good years. it’s a great place. We enjoyed our time there, living there as a family and also obviously coaching there. Todd Monken, our head coach, was unbelievable and I learned a ton from him. And you’re right, we had some good players on that team. And I want to say most to all of that offense with the exception of one or two guys got an opportunity in the NFL, a couple still playing, so definitely have some good memories there, but this Saturday, I also remember how hard it was to come in there and play on the road when teams would come in, so I’m on the other side of it now, and it’s going to be a huge challenge for us. But obviously, I think Hattiesburg is a special place and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Southern Miss and Troy kick things off at 6 p.m. Saturday from M.M. Roberts Stadium.
