Tribute to Fannie Lou Hamer
Students from Pass Road Elementary School now know all about an African-American Civil Rights figure.
Children sang, clapping together for a Black History Month program held in the school gym. Parents and students came to watch actress Billie Jean Young star in a one-woman play called “This Little Light.” The play was about African-American Civil Rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer.
Pass Road Elementary principal Simone Fairley tells News 25 the play showcased Hamer’s hope and perseverance.
“She fought for Civil Rights and she wouldn’t take her name off the list so she could vote,” said third grader James Ellison.
“I think it taught not only black history but we need to fight together for rights and that one person’s cause can be another person’s cause as well,” said Fairley.
It was a historic night to remember for kids and their parents. The program ended with the student choir coming together for a song.
