Trial for Darian Atkinson will be held in Biloxi in front of Rankin County jury

The man accused of killing Biloxi Police Officer Robert McKeithen in 2019 will stand trial in Biloxi, but with a jury from a central Mississippi county.

According to our media partner the Sun Herald, the trial for Darian Atkinson will be held here in South Mississippi with a jury from Rankin County selected to hear the case.

Judge Christopher Schmidt also ruled the death penalty will remain an option at sentencing should a jury convict Atkinson of capital murder.

The Sun Herald’s report also says Judge Schmidt is considering whether to allow law enforcement officers attending the trial to wear their uniforms to avoid any impact on the jury’s actions.

The trial is currently set for September 27th, provided it is not delayed due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.
