Trey Shaffer wins Gatorade Player of the Year
One of the biggest individual accolades a high school athlete can receive is Mississippi’s Gatorade Player of the Year. For baseball, this year’s recipient hails from right here on the Gulf Coast.
Yesterday, the award went to former Biloxi Indian Trey Shaffer, who’s the first player from the Coast to win it since George County and Southern Miss alum Mason Robbins in 2011.
The Southeastern Louisiana signee did it both on the mound and at the plate this season. The lefty went 8-1 with his arm, sporting a microscopic 1.20 ERA to go along with 106 strikeouts across 64 and a third innings.
On offense, Shaffer hit .380 with four home runs and 31 RBIs, not to mention 13 stolen bases.
