Transgender Town Hall Meeting at USM Gulf Park Campus
Transgender rights have been a hot button topic not just throughout the Magnolia State, but all over the country.
Tonight, the discussion continues during a town hall meeting on USM’s Gulf Park campus. The event started with a discussion led by a panel of transgender men and women, as well as attorneys and advocates for equal rights.
Organizers wanted the meeting to be a safe place for people to ask questions they normally wouldn’t bring up in every day conversation. Professor Angie Burton said, “I think there’s so many aspects that we don’t quite know a lot about and it’s helpful to hear from representatives in the community who deal with it on a daily basis.”
Organizer Petra Ehlers said, “Equality across the board. I’m not asking for special rights. I’m not asking for privilege. I’m asking for the same rights.”
This is just one of the many eye-opening events available for students throughout the week. USM organizations planned dozens of similar activities as part of Diversity and Civility Week on campus.
