Transgender bathroom guidance

The Trump Administration plans to revoke federal guidelines put out under former President Barack Obama allowing public school students to use restrooms and other facilities that correspond with their gender identity.
Last year, the Obama Administration set guidelines requiring that schools allow transgender students to use restrooms that match their chosen gender rather than the gender listed on their birth certificate.
Press Secretary Sean Spicer says that Donald Trump believes this is an issue for the states to decide without federal involvement and that his team plans to issue new guidance soon.
The decision, not yet announced, already sparked concern throughout the LGBTQ community. Although the original guidance carried no force of law, transgender right advocates say it was necessary to protect students from discrimination and keep them out of harm’s way. Mississippi Rainbow Center President Molly Kester said, “Mississippi doesn’t have any non-discrimination policies and it has no policies whatsoever about transgender people and children in bathrooms. The biggest problem/concern that I have is there are children that have actually made themselves sick because they won’t go to the bathroom because they’re getting picked on and bullied.”
Fifteen states have explicit protections for transgender students and many individual school districts in other states have adopted policies that recognize students on the basis of their gender identity.
Press Secretary Spicer says the departments of education and justice plan to reveal more information on the expected guidance later on today.
