Tramway bridge offers safe way to cross Highway 90 in Gulfport
The $18 million tramway bridge that stretched across Highway 90 from Jones Park to the Mississippi Aquarium is nearly finished.
The City of Gulfport and Coast Transit Authority created this tramway to help residents get from the Mississippi Aquarium to Jones Park.
These areas are two of Gulfport’s most highly trafficked areas, seeing nearly 100,000 people a year. During events and peak tourism season, massive crowds cross Highway 90, creating traffic and unsafe conditions.
Pedestrians can now bypass the highway and cross the street with ease. There will be a walking and biking lane and a lane for the trolley that is ADA compliant. CTA Director Kevin Coggin said, “The main reason is the safety factor. We now have a way to get people safely back and forth efficiently. We frequently see young ladies with babies crossing back and forth, and that’s just an example.”
Coggin says they are excited to be moving in a direction that makes Gulfport more pedestrian-friendly. Coast Transit Authority expects the tramway to open Saturday, January 27th.
