Train and bus fatal collision reaction
News 25’s Kendra Turley shares reaction from witnesses who watched the tragic event unfold in Biloxi this afternoon.
Witness Craig Robinson said, “I didn’t plan to see this today. I didn’t plan to watch this happen.”
Shock and disbelief throughout the City of Biloxi after a CSX train collided with a charter bus carrying nearly 50 senior citizens. Witness Mark Robinson said, “I noticed that the conductor was doing everything in his power to stop the train, but the momentum was too far forward.”
The driver attempted to cross a railroad near the intersection of Esters Boulevard and Main Street when the bus stalled at the top of the tracks. A nearby resident noticed the bus stuck on the tracks moments before the collision, he was able to help some people off, but he also was a witness to the tragic loss of life. “I took off running, trying to get the people off the bus and next thing I knew I looked up and I seen the training coming and I knew then it was a little too late,” said Craig Robinson.
Majority of the people on board were able to walk away from the crash. Passenger Betty Kahanek said, “I’m fine, scrapes and bruises. Saint Michael the Archangel took care of me.”
Other passengers were not as fortunate. Authorities confirmed at least four fatalities. Seven people walked away completely uninjured, but over 30 were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said, “We’re not sure about the bus itself, why it was stopped, if it was having engine problems or what.”
As investigators try to piece together the moments leading up to the crash, first responders, city leaders, and people all throughout the community continue to search for ways to comfort the passengers and their families. Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich said, “Ask for prayers and thoughts for the people who are involved here. Again, it’s a tragic day for the City of Biloxi.”
