Traffic fatality shuts down stretch of Highway 90 in Gulfport

Gulfport Police responded to a traffic fatality on Highway 90 on Monday afternoon.

The pedestrian was sitting on a bench on the beach boardwalk when they were struck by a vehicle that landed upside down on the sand.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer confirmed the victim was 25-year-old D’Ante Burks of Gulfport.

He was brought to Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead around 1:30 PM.

Burks was reported to have died of blunt force trauma.

Police said in a post to social media that the incident had east- and westbound lanes closed from 15th Street to Thornton Avenue.
