Total cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi surpasses 10,000; over 450 deaths reported

(WXXV) — The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 182 new cases of COVID-19 in the state and 8 new deaths as of Tuesday, May 12. Seven of those deaths were from prior weeks identified through death certificate investigation.

Mississippi’s total of COVID-19 cases since March 11 now stands at 10,090, with 465 deaths. The number of Mississippians currently hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 infection has fallen to 437.

Here’s a look at the cases by county in South Mississippi:

  • Hancock County still has 75 (1 new) cases and ten (0 new) deaths.
  • Harrison County has 210 (9 new) and six (0 new) deaths.
  • Stone County has 23 (0 new) cases and no deaths.
  • George County has 16 (1) and 1 (0 new) death.
  • Jackson County has 278 (2 new) cases and 13 (0 new) deaths.
  • Pearl River County now has 190 (0 new) cases and 25 (0 new) deaths.

Meanwhile, Hinds County still has the most cases in the state with 698 (17 new).

28 of the new cases reported today were among residents in long-term care facilities, and there are now 111 active outbreaks of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities (where an outbreak is one or more cases among residents or staff).

As of May 3, the state reported 6,268 cases of COVID-19 were presumed recovered.
