Tornado touches down in Pascagoula

A small tornado touched down shortly before midnight in Pascagoula on Friday.
The tornado tore through parts of town and left some areas severely damaged including a CrossFit gym, which was destroyed. The heavy winds knocked out most of the windows, ripped off the garage doors, and blew off the gym’s roof.
Most Pascagoula residents were a bit luckier. They were left with very little to no damage.
The National Weather Service ruled the tornado an E-F1 storm, meaning winds were blowing between 86 and 110 miles per hour. Pascagoula resident Ginger Lockwood said, “There were some trees down and I think farther down on Washington there were some more trees down. Of course, this building at CrossFit is completely destroyed and I’m surprised because I didn’t even know the weather had gotten that bad.”
The Parks and Recreation Center did sustain some damages. City officials say regular classes and programs will continue to be housed at the rec center.
However, starting today the summer day camp will be moved to Trent Lott Academy on Pascagoula Street. Camp will still run from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and activity schedules will remain the same, but the drop off and pick up will be at the Trent Lott Academy Cafeteria.
Parents are advised to use the bus drop off area on Pascagoula Street.
