Tommy Schaefer re-elected as Diamondhead mayor

If there’s any scenario that proves every vote counts, it’s the City of Diamondhead’s mayoral race. Incumbent Mayor Tommy Schaefer took the seat once again by just three votes.
Last night’s final tally came up as a one vote difference with Schaefer in the lead, until the affidavits were counted this afternoon. Out of seven total affidavit ballots, three were rejected for not being registered voters in the city. An investigation revealed one absentee ballot was unopened last night. That vote was counted today as well.
After all of this, the unofficial results revealed 1,125 votes for Knoblock and 1,127 for Schaefer. Diamondhead Republican Executive Committee Chairman Ty Necaise said, “We were here until midnight last night and we got through about half of the results and then the actual certification of the election will probably be Friday or so. It’s been a very busy process, yes.”
Both candidates say they were not expecting this race to be as close as it was.
