Tomato and Watermelon Festival
Every Saturday, the Ocean Springs Farmers Market is open for anyone to come and enjoy. This past Saturday they changed things up a little.
Saturday marked the end of tomato season and the beginning of watermelon season for farmers along the Gulf Coast. So, the Ocean Springs Farmers Market decided to hold a small festival to celebrate the two. It was a great success with some of the farmers telling News 25 that their trucks were filled with watermelons and tomatoes.
The farmers market runs from 9 to 1 on Saturdays year-round. Farmers Market Coordinator Diane Claughton said, “They’re are all growers, they’re local growers, food producers. There are no resellers at this market so you know where this stuff is coming from. You can talk to the farmer. You can talk to the food producer. You can actually go to the farm and see where it’s being grown. It’s really different.”
Market organizers hope to hold another event similar to this one, but for okra.
