Three-year-old beating death in Meridian

A Mississippi father is charged with capital murder after beating his toddler to death while teaching her a lesson on numbers.
Meridian police say Joshua Salovich told them he used a bamboo rod and a cell phone cord to beat his three-year-old daughter because she wasn’t getting her numbers right. Detectives say the little girl soiled her clothing so Salovich further beat her for that, too.
Detectives say the 25-year-old father confessed to the beatings in multiple police interviews. They say he told them “the streets are hard and for her to survive she has to be hard, too.”
Detectives say Salovich is not the girl’s biological father, but his name appears on her birth certificate. The girl’s mother told police she was in another room with the television on at the time and was unaware of the beatings.
Salovich is being held without bond.
