Three projects currently underway at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport
A lot of new projects and updates are happening at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
The Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport is in the midst of updating and upgrading its property. Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport Executive Director Clay Williams said, “We’re always working diligently as an airport to enhance our infrastructure. We want to enhance safety; we want to improve efficiency and also look for projects that are for customer convenience. We always pride ourselves here at the airport in being a facility that’s easy to use, that’s convenient for the traveling public, and so we have a number of efforts underway currently.”
The airport was established initially in 1942 as an Army airfield and all of the drainage infrastructure at the airport is the original pipework.
One of the major projects in progress is replacing all of that infrastructure on the airfield. This initiative includes replacement of lining, pipes, and rerouting some lines. This is a two-phase project with an approximately $4 million price tag.
An update on an almost 80-year-old drainage system is huge, but that’s not all, there are also two more projects currently underway.
Another exciting effort is the expansion of the rental car lot. There are six rental agencies that operate at the airport and the expansion of the lot will provide an additional 50 spaces.
In addition to the new lot, one of three generators installed at Gulfport-Biloxi is in the process of being replaced. “We have three generators, 1,000 kilowatt generators that power the airport terminal building in the event of a severe weather event, so it’s very important that we remain operational throughout hurricane season and other inclement weather occurrences.”
The airport is excited about the current projects and is looking forward to more ideas coming to life soon.
