The Blood Center holds blood drive to help increase supply

The Blood Center hosted a blood drive in their mobile center in front of the Harrison County Courthouse as the Coast continues to face a critical shortage.

Before the blood drive even began, people were lined up willing to give. The Blood Center’s goal for the day was to collect 15 to 20 pints of blood. Before 2 p.m. it already surpassed its goal.

As a way to say thank you, donors had the option to choose from a mystery envelope containing gift cards and food vouchers or a t-shirt and prize of the month, Halloween socks.

The Blood Center is a primary blood supplier for hospitals on the Coast. They are trying to help increase the blood supply since there is still a national blood shortage. Blood Center Gulf Coast Regional Director John Pace said, “Because we’re in this national shortage and it does affect, especially the Gulf Coast. If you think about it, it is a summer resort area. There’s way more blood usage, way more accidents. We are currently postponing or what we call back ordering to the tune of 400 plus procedures a month. If you give blood with the Blood Center here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, it’s going to be used in the communities.”
