Teen mother facing murder charges in death of three month old

A Gulfport teenage mother is facing murder charges in the death of her three-month-old son.

According to our media partner, The Sun Herald, police say 17-year-old Yakira Caffrey is accused of fracturing her son’s skull and leg. They say the child also had brain bleeding and severe hemorrhaging when he was admitted to a Gulfport hospital in September.

She’s charged with second-degree murder after investigators determined the infant was abused and the coroner ruled the death a homicide.

Caffrey didn’t give a reasonable explanation of how he was injured and was unable to appear at a preliminary hearing on Wednesday to determine if her case will go to the grand jury.

A new hearing date will be set.
