Teen in DHS custody after setting hotel room on fire

Gulfport Fire Department responded to a blaze at Hilton Garden Inn on Airport Road.

According to Gulfport police, a 14-year-old in Department of Human Services custody set a room on fire.

The fire was contained to a room on the second floor — 83 rooms were occupied and all residents evacuated safely.

“Units got a call at approximately 3:16 pm report of a structure fire at the Hilton Garden Inn here behind me,” said Billy Kelley, Gulfport’s fire chief. “There were Heavy smoke condition here inside the hotel one of the rooms on the second floor had a small fire contained to that room, our guys got up there and quick extinguishment and started evacuating the structure immediately.”

One minor injury was reported — a male visitor was treated and released on scene.
