Tech Byte: Deck Tech

Patrick welcomes guest Jamie Breneman from Chattanooga Exteriors to discuss the tech behind new deck finishes.

Have you ever had that summer cookout where you walk across your deck, your feet are hot, your dog doesn’t want to join you? Today on Tech Byte, I have a friend that’s going to solve all of those problems for you. I’m Patrick Moates. Welcome to this week’s tech bite.

This week in the studio, we have my friend Jamie Brennaman from Chattanooga, Exteriors, and he’s going to tell us about some new tech to help keep your feet cool and pet friendly during your summer cookouts. Jamie, thank you for coming. What have you brought with us and why is it appropriate for tech byte?

JAMIE: This is new technology that we’ve done with composite decking. So this is made by Trex Worldwide Leader in composite decking. So this technology reflects the sunlight and keeps your deck cooler. The big, big knock on composite deck’s always been it gets hot. I can’t even go out there barefoot. You know, I’ve heard it all. And so just like everything will get hot, but this technology that’s in the coating of this board reflects the sunlight, which keeps it about 15 degrees cooler, depending on the temperature.

PATRICK: So how does that compare to wood, is it 15 degrees cooler than wood or composite?

JAMIE: 15 degrees cooler than composite.  So, like your traditional composite, you know, let’s say, you know, is 100 degrees. This would be 85 degrees. It’s really great. I mean, we’ve got a lot of compliments out of it. You know, people you know, when you’re doing this, you want to do composite and you want to do it for life. You want to do it one time, be done with it and enjoy it. A lot of people are going to this board because they see the benefits of it.

PATRICK: Right. I don’t have to stain it. There’s no. And so once it’s done, it’s pretty much there until I sell the house and move out.

JAMIE:  Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You just wash it, you know, hose it down. You know, if you get any, you know, spill anything on it. You want to get that up, you know, immediately. But that’s common sense.

PATRICK: Okay. And so for somebody like me, I tend to set things on fire. How does it do if a cold rolls out of my smoker and on to it, is it going to melt? Is it going to catch on fire? My wife will want to know that, you.

JAMIE: No, it won’t catch on fire. I mean, obviously, get it out, pick it up, you know, and it probably will not do anything to it. But if there’s ever anything that it does to it, we have a special technique that we can use to come out and kind of get that burn mark out of it.
