Teachers prepare for upcoming school year

Summer break is wrapping up for many students across the Coast and that means teachers are already back in the classroom preparing for the first day of school.

Empty hallways, shiny floors, and classrooms full of decorations can only mean one thing: the new school year is right around the corner. For Harrison County teachers, the countdown has begun to August 7th, the first day of classes. Preparations for that day started well before summer break. Fifth grade teacher Kelli Talley said, “I’ve been preparing for this school year since April. I’ve been trying to kind of get my lessons together and what I want to do the first week and what I wanted my room to look like.”

For Toya Coleman, it’s her first year of teaching and she is counting the days until school begins. “First year. Super, super excited. I can’t wait to meet the kids this year and just love them and support them through their fourth grade journey. It’s just going to be so exciting.”

Whether a teacher has been doing this many years or it’s their first year, they all agree there are still a little bit of nerves going into the first day of the school year. “Being that it is my first year, of course, I’m really, really nervous. You always want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to support them. You want to make sure you’re making the best decisions, the best choices. Everything has to reflect back on them.”

As time closes in on August 7th, it’s not only the hard work and preparation that make for a successful school year, but also the teacher’s love and passion to inspire the next generation. “They have so much energy, so much spirit about themselves. It’s just really exciting to be around every day, to spend your life doing that,” said Coleman.
