Tax possible for temporary rentals

Mississippi’s tax collector is looking at taxing properties rented through popular online rental services.
Popular sites such as Vacation Rentals by Owner and Air BNB feature homeowners putting their homes or apartments up for rent for vacationers. The new tax would mean any property that advertises for rent must pay seven percent sales tax. Local taxes can add up to five percent more. Most cities across the country only allow special rentals with a special permit.
While hotel owners support the new tax, saying the rentals should have to pay the same taxes they do. Some state leaders believe the state department of revenue may be overstepping their bounds.
