Tax Free Weekend Kicks Off Tomorrow

Starting tomorrow through Saturday, all clothing and footwear will be exempt from the 7 percent sales tax, just in time for back to school shopping.
In just one week, many South Mississippi schools will be back in session. But for now, students are flocking to local department stores looking for that perfect back to school look.
It’s a family affair for students Maggie and Bailey Brown, who were working their way through stores at Gulfport’s Premium Outlets Mall to find clothes that fit their budget. “Cheaper clothes and just stuff that looks nice, that we could wear that actually is appropriate,” said Vancleave High student Bailey Brown.
And the clothes here will be even cheaper as the state’s annual sales tax holiday weekend kicks in tomorrow and Saturday, saving shoppers 7 percent sales tax on clothes and shoes. So, today is just a dress rehearsal for the Browns, who plan to buy most of their clothes tomorrow. Vancleave Middle School student Maggie Brown said, “Getting ready to go back to Vancleave Middle School. I’m going into seventh grade and then tomorrow we’re going to come back for tax free. This is something we do every year, it’s exciting.”
The sales tax holiday applies to all eligible items under one hundred dollars.
Gulfport Premium Outlets Director of Marketing Rhonda Roberts said, “And of course, jewelry, handbags, luggage and backpacks are not a part of it, even though they will be on sale. Unfortunately, they won’t be for tax free, it will just be shoes and clothing.”
Expecting large crowds, the Gulfport Premium Outlets will be extending their hours tomorrow and Saturday, opening at 8 a.m. which is two hours ahead of the mall’s normal hours. “It’s been an exceptional summer at Gulfport Premium Outlets, so we’re expecting a nice turnout for tax-free weekend and people know this time to get out and shop for back to school,” said Roberts.
