Tax Free Weekend is Here
Mississippi’s tax free weekend is in full swing with back to school right around the corner.
Fridays and Saturdays are normally pretty busy days for Edgewater Mall. Today, the lines were even longer than usual with shoppers like Candance Wells getting a little more bang for their buck from Mississippi’s tax free weekend. “I have five kids and to me any additional discounts I can get are wonderful. They range from the age of 17 to four, and I am taking advantage of the tax free.”
All day today and tomorrow, the 7 percent sales tax will be exempt on all clothing and footwear under one hundred dollars each. Edgewater Mall extended their hours to accommodate the crowds. The mall will close at 10 p.m. on both days.
Edgewater Mall Marketing Director Michelle Rogers said, “There’s a lot more traffic here and it was here early. We opened at 9 a.m. this morning, as opposed to our normal opening time of 10 a.m., and we had a lot of people in here early. They’re ready to do their shopping because the tax free weekend falls very close to school starting this year.”
That’s why Candance Wells hit the Edgewater Mall today to make sure her kids are all set with the clothes they need to start school next week. “I bought some uniform tops from Aeropostale, and I’m going to head to Belk, so I can pick up some capris and Bermuda shorts.”
The Mississippi sales tax holiday only applies to clothing and footwear. So, for things like jewelry, wallets, and even backpacks, you’ll still have to pay the full 7 percent sales tax.
“Those kinds of things, unfortunately, aren’t included. But, as far as the clothing and getting the kids ready for the things they need to start back to school with, the shoes and even uniforms, the khaki bottoms, the navy bottoms, and polo style tops are included,” said Rogers.
