Tax Day is here

The annual deadline to file your taxes has now been moved to tomorrow because of IRS technical difficulties.

By law, the IRS may assess penalties to taxpayers for both failing to file a tax return and for failing to pay taxes by tomorrow’s Tax Day deadline at 11:59 p.m.

The penalty for filing late is normally five percent of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that the tax return is late.

News 25 spoke to Samuel Albritton, the owner of Albritton Accounting Agency, who says filing your taxes is an important part of being an American. “Well, number one the government needs some money to pay for the necessities of our United States, that’s an important part. The real aspect to it is that when we don’t pay our taxes we lose part of our civic responsibility. For me, I love this country, most people love this country, and it’s just part of being an American. You should pay your taxes.”

If you still need more time you can file an extension and you’ll get six months extra time, making your new tax deadline October 15th. To do this, you’ll need to submit a 48-68 form. You can learn more by visiting IRS.gov.
