Taking Steps Toward Healthier Lifestyles

Let’s Go Gulf Coast and Singing River Hospital are taking a step to encourage a more balanced and healthy lifestyle in their employees and guests.
Today, the hospital cut the ribbon to their new walking path, seven laps around the ground floor equals a mile. The path gives employees and guests an easier opportunity to get the exercise they need right there inside of the hospital.
The initiative even goes beyond the walking path, encouraging everyone to make a 5-2-1-0 goal, meaning eat five or more vegetables, limit recreational screen time to less than two hours, at least one hour of exercise and zero sugary drinks a day. Administrator for Singing River Laurin St. Pe said, “We’re currently listed as number three as the most obese state in the nation, but what’s more concerning than that is our children are following in our footsteps and we need to do something to reverse that trend.”
Kelsey Keel with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Youth Health Coalition said, “We want our Let’s Go Gulf Coast program to eventually spread coast-wide. We want people to see our message: make 5-2-1-0 your goal every day.”
As part of the initiative, the health system designated indoor walking paths at both Singing River and Ocean Springs hospitals.
