SWAC postpones fall sports; football to be played in spring

After a report surfaced Friday that the Southwestern Athletic Conference would cancel fall sports, SWAC Commissioner Charles McClelland said that report was 100 percent inaccurate and premature. Turns out it wasn’t.

Today, SWAC officials announced their decision to postpone all scheduled fall contests as well as SWAC championships due to ongoing concerns over COVID-19. The sports impacted by this decision are football, men and women’s cross country, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball.

As it pertains to the gridiron, the SWAC is already planning on a seven game conference schedule in the spring in which schools will play four divisional games, two non-divisional games, with the option of playing a single non-conference game.

The Mississippi schools affected are Jackson State, Alcorn State, and Mississippi Valley State, and even Southern Miss who now needs to find a new game to replace JSU on September 19th.
