Suspect at large for aggravated assault in George County

One person suffered a gunshot wound and another sustained minor injuries after shots fired at a residence in George County Tuesday.

The George County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a verbal dispute in the 100 block of Richard Reeves Road in the central community. Deputies say they were notified that shots had been fired before their arrival. Once on the scene, police found that an altercation occurred and a firearm was taken.

After an investigation, police charged 32-year-old Billy Joe Stewart with aggravated assault and he remains at large. Police say Stewart fled the scene before officers arrived and was last seen in the central community at the time of the incident.

A warrant has been issued for Stewart’s arrest and the investigation is ongoing.
