Suspect identified in fatal shooting of George County sheriff’s deputy
According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, the suspect accused of shooting and killing George County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Malone has been identified as 43-year-old Rickey Powell.
On Thursday, January 4th around 5:15 p.m., a deputy with the George County Sheriff’s Office was shot and killed in the line of duty on Highway 98 near the intersection of Brushy Creek Road.
Deputy Jeremy Malone was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop at this location.
The suspect led other law enforcement officers and law enforcement agencies on a vehicle pursuit out of George County.
MBI said in a press release that deputies with George County and officers from MBI fired at the suspect as the pursuit ended near Beaumont, Mississippi. Multiple rounds were fired and the suspect died.
This incident is being investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
Gov. Tate Reeves issued a statement via X expressing sympathy for the loss of the deputy.
“Tonight, Mississippi’s heart breaks for George County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jeremy Malone, who was shot and killed in the line of duty.
“Please join Elee and me in praying for this fallen hero’s friends and family during this terrible time. Mississippi will always remember Deputy Malone.
“Our state remains deeply thankful for all our law enforcement officers who bravely place their lives on the line every day in defense of our communities.”
This is the first officer-involved shooting of 2024.
