Suspect arrested after pursuit through Stone and Harrison Counties
Stone County, Miss. (WXXV) — A suspect is in custody after leading law enforcement on a pursuit through Stone and Harrison counties that ended in a crash Sunday morning.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the incident began around 11:34am. at Lake-A-Way Campgrounds on Highway 26 east of Wiggins. Investigators say the suspect fled the campground in a stolen vehicle before being located traveling south on U.S. Highway 49 near Wiggins.
A pursuit followed involving Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers and deputies from the Stone County Sheriff’s Office and Harrison County Sheriff’s Office. During the chase, authorities say the suspect drove the wrong way on U.S. Highway 49 and struck multiple law enforcement vehicles before leaving the roadway and crashing into a ditch.
Officials say the suspect was taken into custody without further incident and transported to Stone County, where he is currently being held.
No Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers or sheriff’s deputies were injured during the pursuit.
Multiple charges are anticipated. The investigation remains ongoing, with the Stone County Sheriff’s Office serving as the lead agency in the investigation into the original incident at the campground. No additional information has been released at this time.
