Summit police officer killed in shootout at safety checkpoint

Two people are dead after a standoff in Summit, Mississippi.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting on Thursday that claimed the life of a Summit police officer and the subject.

MBI said Summit police officers were working a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue when a car approached and a passenger pointed a weapon towards the officers,
striking one officer causing fatal injuries. That officer has been identified as Patrolman Troy Floyd, a veteran of two decades in law enforcement.

Two additional McComb police officers — Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts — arrived in the area and encountered the subject engaging in an exchange of gunfire. Both officers received non-life-threatening injuries in the exchange and the subject received fatal injuries.

This information is preliminary and subject to change.

MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.

The incident is the 22nd officer-involved shooting in the state this year. There were 27 such incidents in Mississippi in 2023.
