Summer fun for Camp Able and the City of Gulfport

Today a group of diverse ability summer campers had a double dose of summer fun.
Camp Able, a summer camp that caters to children with special needs, took a trip to Jones Park in Gulfport for a little bit of splash pad fun. This is one of several field trips Camp Able has planned with the goal of empowering campers through fun experiences.
They probably did not expect a special guest from the city’s police and fire departments who were both on hand giving campers an up close and personal look at their equipment. Stephen Kidd with St. Mark’s Episcopal Church said, “What’s really unique about Camp Able is that it is dignity driven. That every kid who maybe doesn’t get to decide what they do every day, at Camp Able they get to do everything and they get to do it the way they want to and the way that fits them and the fact that we respect the dignity of every human being, especially these kids who get to go to camp for a week and have never gotten to do that.”
Camp Able got its start in Florida over a decade ago before spreading across the United States, allowing campers to overcome physical and verbal barriers to enjoy a true summer camp experience.
