Summer food service program in Biloxi

School is out for the summer and organizations along the Coast are making sure children are being fed healthy meals.
The Biloxi Summer Food Service Program kicked off today at the Point Cadet Plaza. Around 200 kids from the Coast played on bouncy houses, enjoyed face paintings, and ate a healthy meal.
This initiative to give free meals to children under 18 is driven by Feeding the Gulf Coast, the Mississippi Department of Education, and Magnolia Health. Organizers tell News 25 even though school doors are closed, kids can always find a healthy free meal in the local area. Nutrition Programs Manager Melissa Olsen said, “In the summertime, the schools, which normally supply our kids breakfast and lunches, aren’t operating. So, we’re a program, an organization, that we’re able to do that for our community.”
This is the fourth year of the program kickoff event in Biloxi. Mayor Gilich proclaimed June 9th, 2017 as Summer Food Service Program Day in the City of Biloxi
