Students gain hands-on experience through Gulf South Roofing Builds career pathways

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)-Gulf South Roofing is expanding more than rooftops; it’s expanding career opportunities across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The Gulfport-based business has partnered with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to host construction management interns who are gaining hands-on experience in project management, estimating, safety, and field operations.

Company leaders have also participated in job fairs, veteran hiring events at Camp Shelby, and classroom presentations, encouraging students to consider careers in construction while highlighting the importance of leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Gulf South Roofing Owner Jacob North said, “I think Shad is doing a great job with his program doing the construction management. I’ve been appreciative of getting to know him. I definitely want to continue doing internships. He actually asked us to come speak to their class and that’s where this started and I definitely want to do that more for him and even any other programs if there are programs available.”

Intern Patrick Carew said, “I was ready to take the next step into learning more about the construction world and they actually came to our school and that was a big thing for me that they took the time to come out there and talk with us. I actually know some of the people that work here and they recommended me to do it too. So, I was really looking forward to learning everything that I could through them.”

Intern Clay Martin said, “Coming out here has actually been really awesome, seeing the actual hands-on work of what’s being done and it’s been super helpful, I’m a visual learner too and hands-on so it’s been amazing.”
